Lithium batteries have become the preferred energy source to power a wide variety of consumer goods ranging from mobile phones to children’s toys to e-bikes. Though widely used, most people are not aware that lithium batteries are dangerous goods which require special consideration and can pose a safety risk if not prepared and transported in compliance with the transport regulations. The transport regulations applicable to lithium batteries can be difficult to navigate for companies and individuals who are not familiar with dangerous goods in general. As there are different parties involved in the transport of lithium batteries from manufacturers, technicians and engineers to battery assemblers and consumer electronics retailers, IATA has created these guidelines to assist shippers of lithium batteries and equipment containing lithium batteries in meeting their safety obligations.
